1882- 32nd US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the longest serving president in US History, Roosevelt was elected to four terms and served 12 years. Roosevelt came into office during the Great Depression inaugurating The New Deal, an economic package of programs to provide a social safety net and create jobs. New Deal policies failed to pull the US out of the Depression. Roosevelt was far sighted in recognizing the threat of Nazi Germany and offered Lend-Lease and other favorable terms to England at the outset of the war while preparing the US to enter the war. After the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt led the US into World War II providing effective leadership. He died only a month before Germany surrendered. Though the New Deal failed economically, Roosevelt was a gifted speaker who provided comfort during hard times. He is one of the three most important US presidents for his visionary foreign policies as the clouds of war gathered.
